Smoke free living

Smoke free homes

Enjoy a smoke free home and have the benefit of a healthier, cleaner home for all your family!
Join us to promote smoke free homes to protect babies, children, adults and pets from breathing in other people’s cigarette smoke (second hand smoke). Many people are choosing to make their homes safer by smoking outdoors and they are asking visitors to do the same.

Did you know……

  • Second hand smoke causes ill health including asthma, heart disease and cancer;
  • Cigarette smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals, the same ingredients as ant poison, rocket fuel and floor cleaner! These stay around the room and house even if the windows are open;
  • Babies and children are most at risk from second hand smoke. If you smoke around your children, they can breathe in the equivalent of 150 cigarettes per year.

What are the benefits of a smoke free home? When your home is smoke free the benefits start immediately – your children are likely to be healthier, with less risk of:

  • Cot death babies exposed to one hours’ smoke each day are twice as likely to die from cot death;
  • Coughing, wheezing and chest infections;
  • Asthma;
  • Behavioural problems;
  • Learning difficulties ;
  • Middle ear infection;
  • Being one of the 50 children admitted to a UK hospital each day as a result of breathing second hand smoke;
  • Missing school through illness.

Make your home a smoke free home and your home will be:

  • cleaner – no more ash or cigarette burns!
  • full of fresh air – 4,000 polluting chemicals gone!
  • less likely to catch fire – smoking is a major cause of house fires!

Stop Smoking Wales helps people quit smoking

Stop Smoking Wales is a national community-based smoking cessation service funded by Public Health Wales.  Support to help people quit smoking is provided by Smoking Cessation Advisors in community venues, including GP surgeries and leisure centres. Support can be received in a one-to-one clinic or smokers can join a stop smoking group. For those unable to visit an advisor in person, a telephone support service is also available. The Stop Smoking Wales support programme consists of an assessment session followed by six weekly behavioural support sessions. Topics discussed include:

  • dealing with withdrawal symptoms;
  • nicotine replacement therapy (e.g. gum or patches) or other treatment aids;
  • coping with difficult situations.

Carbon monoxide levels are regularly measured.

Stop Smoking Wales has also launched a new 28-day online service. The service offers daily support, tips and advice to help smokers manage cravings, stay motivated and understand the benefits of being smoke-free. Smokers embarking on the online journey will be asked to create a personalised quit plan and set pledges and rewards for key milestones throughout the process. Once registered, users will be invited to complete four short weekly online sessions and encouraged to log-in between the sessions to access information, motivation and support to help them kick the habit. Launch of Smokefree Me Wales online community

Smokefree Me, a new online community for people in Wales wanting to quit smoking was launched in December 2015 by ash – action on smoking and health.

Smokefree Me is focused around a supportive Facebook page which will act as a hub for would-be quitters to get top tips to becoming smokefree as well as any guidance they’d like from our trained cessation advisers.

The aim is to have members sharing their stories and encouraging others to give up the habit too.
In addition to this, there’ll be an interactive website with information about how to be a Smokefree Me including previous quitter’s stories and a Twitter page sharing motivational advice.

Looking for help to stop smoking? @smokefreeme_ is a new supportive community for Welsh quitters. Join in!
